Campaign for Justice is now a Crusade!

As the 2010 Democratic Nominee for Place 2 on the Alabama Supreme Court, I committed myself to raising public awareness to some very serious issues involving the integrity and sanctity of Alabama's appellate courts. A growing perception of impropriety and impartiality surrounds our highest court and very few people are aware. Headlines across Alabama and America question whether "Justice is for sale in Alabama", but few in the public really understand what is happening.

Alabama has the most expensive judicial elections in the country! See the articles posted on www.justiceforsalealabama.com The cost for running the Alabama Supreme Court far exceeds second place Ohio (a state with substantial population compared to Alabama).

As a practicing attorney, I started noticing a dangerous influx of out-of-state corporate money flooding Alabama's Supreme Court elections in the 1990's. The political axiom that the one with the most money wins started coming true as many honorable Justices were being defeated and in their place came people who clearly have a driving political agenda. The change in Alabama law has been remarkable with this corporate brand of judicial activism.

You can almost be assured that out-of-state, multi-national corporate interest will almost always win in the appeals process. The law is frequently changed to suit the fancy of the court on a case by case basis. Attorneys and Judges hardly know the law anymore, except that on appeal the Supreme Court will find a way to change it in favor of corporate interest.

For years, I bellyached about the affairs of the court with just my friends, but in 2010, I had had enough! I was not going to be silent! I have the right to free speech and I intend to use it. When entering the 2010 race, I was fully aware that victory would virtually be impossible. Most lawyers have given up the fight and raising money was going to be a problem. If you add up what my opponent spent and a clandestine group out of Washington, DC spent for his election, I was outspent 10 to 1. However, my message was getting out.

Since the election, I have used my Tom Edwards for Justice Facebook page to shine more light on the dark nature of Alabama's Supreme Court.

So my political campaign for office is over, but not my Crusade for Justice. I hope you will follow me on Facebook and here on my blog and the Justice for Sale website. Feel free to share anything you like with your friends. The only way we can restore Alabama's Supreme Court back to the citizens and our small businesses is by awakening the public consciousness. We cannot compete with the money of Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Insurance and Wall Street. But we still have our personal influence and our votes!
